Commentary: Comments on Spottiswoode and May
Mikel Aickin, Center for Health Research, Kaiser Permanente Northwest
Region, Porthland, OR
This comment examines the accompanying paper by S. James P. Spottiswoode
and E. C. May; specifically, the statistical analysis of the primary
endpoint—the comparison of the fraction of skin conductance responses
preceding an audio stimulation with the fraction preceding a period
of silence. It addresses the three following points: that the author's
statistical analysis does not meet current professional standards; that,
by under-analyzing their data, the authors have failed to note patterns
that are important for their interpretation; and, that by pre-conceiving
the meaning of their experiment, the authors have missed an alternative
interpretation that is more highly supported by a statistical analysis
of their data.
Keywords: statistical analysis, skin conductance
