Greetings Fellow SSE Members:

You’re probably not going to be surprised, but both the SSE and the PA have decided to postpone the planned joint conference for a year. We’ve been hit with a cascading series of whammies, ranging from the biological, through the social, to the economic. Hopefully, the biological will soon pass, but the social and economic fallout may persevere.

Many of our projected attendees would have been coming from not only far off places within the US, but also overseas. The travel ramifications alone are dicey, and the expanding list of unknowns has been making planning problematic. Many of you have already expressed this to me.

The SSE/PA conference has been postponed to 2021, with dates tentatively set for June 9-12th at the same venue, the Hilton Durham hotel near Duke University. John Kruth has agreed to remain as program chair, and will issue a new call for papers later this year.

In the meantime, we’ve already begun thinking about what might be possible over the course of the year to keep our community engaged. Having regularly scheduled webinars/podcasts, for example, might be in order. We welcome your suggestions.

With a heavy sigh,
Bill Bengston, President
