He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Santa Clara University in 1981 (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and his doctorate in Physics from the University of California, Irvine, in 1987, with thesis work in experimental plasma physics investigating the phase space development of elementary plasma processes. His research interests include negative ion plasmas, planetary formation, Casimir effect, the physics of time, the phenomenon of consciousness, and the foundations of thermodynamics, specifically the limits to the second law.
